06 Feb 10 First Dewalt tool I don’t like.

I bought the Dewalt DW433K from Lowes. Within 30 seconds of turning it on, the bolt in the back wheel snapped the nut off the end, and now the wheel doesn’t turn… the shaft of the bolt broke in half. Returning it to Lowes and going to get the porter cable one they had.

Update: Lowes let me return it, I went back over to the tool section, and noticed that the same bolt had broke off the one they had on display. Must have been a return just like mine. Needless to say. One is a QA issue, two of them with the same problem is a design flaw. I’d stay away from the DW433K until they solve that issue. I picked up the porter cable, it’s front wheel is a solid roll, and I can tell will give the belt great support. I ran it for a couple minutes and it worked flawlessly.

Despite 14″ of snow, I-79 between Fairmont and Morgantown was clear. The sun popped out for maybe 20 minutes before dusk. Deborah took these with my cell.

04 Feb 10 WVU Sports

Wow. Been looking around twitterland and listened to Scott Ferall tonight. Aside from his stereotyping WV, he made some good points. We have a student body that is out of control. And unfortunately the actions of a few are not only symbolizing WVU sports, it is now reflecting on WV as a whole. There is absolutely no call for students or fans to be shouting obscenities, throwing objects, and making verbal personal attacks on opposing players, coaches and fans. We have an absolute problem now. Both PR and in house.

I’d make a few suggestions.

  • Policy on inebriation. Lots of students and fans are drunk going in to the game. We need a policy that does not allow inebriated persons from entering the arena.
  • Expulsion for life from WVU sporting events. If you get caught throwing objects you are not allowed back at a WVU event. If you get caught shouting obscenities you get to leave the arena.
  • For every “chant” that fits a new vulgarity policy, or one of a verbal personal attack, remove 1000 student seats, starting from the lower section.
  • Cage them. Get some nice big mesh netting and cage them, just like hockey arena’s, put a net between the students and the court in case something does happen.

The last two games I have set next to an opposing fan. Both times I ended up having good conversation with them, and we treated each other with respect. That is how every fan should behave. It absolutely sickens me that there are idiots out there who trash another person simply because they cheer for the other team. And if you do that you don’t deserve to be there.

And before anyone from Marshall tries to respond, your fans were guilty of nothing less at the game in Charleston.

04 Feb 10 Nagios nrpe (2.12) on Solaris 10

After configuring it with ssl, I got the following when I ran gmake.

nrpe.c: In function `get_log_facility’:
nrpe.c:617: error: `LOG_AUTHPRIV’ undeclared (first use in this function)
nrpe.c:617: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
nrpe.c:617: error: for each function it appears in.)
nrpe.c:619: error: `LOG_FTP’ undeclared (first use in this function)
*** Error code 1
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `nrpe’
Current working directory /usr/local/src/nrpe-2.12/src
*** Error code 1
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `all’

The Fix is to edit src/srpe.c and go to line 617 and replace LOG_AUTHPRIV with LOG_AUTH, on line 619, replace LOG_FTP with LOG_DAEMON.

After this you should be able to compile with no problems.

29 Jan 10 Kindle vs. iPad

I refuse to like something simply because it is Apple. I used to kind of like Apple products, but haven’t since just after I got my wife the original iPhone and got to see Apple’s real Microsoft style business model.

This is a stupid argument if you are not a book reader, you are not the Kindle’s market anyway. Amazon loses nothing if you get an iPad simply because you are not buying books in the first place.

Kindle Positives
  • Reading device.
  • Hundreds of daily newspapers.
  • E-Ink
  • Weeks between battery charges.
  • Monochrome.
  • No video.
  • No apps, I’m not watching a movie, I’m reading a book. It’s much better than any movie.
  • Built solid, can throw around just like a book.
  • Non-touch screen.
Kindle Negatives
  • Amazon store only, although other formats are rumored to be coming soon.
  • Requires ambient light, just like a book.
iPad Postitives
  • apps, apps, apps
  • might open reading to those who are not “readers,” although I bet on a very scaled down.
  • visual media
  • iPod style technology, screen will break easy.
iPad Negatives
  • Touch screen, how do I read if the screen is constantly smeared with finger oil.
  • Apple
  • 3G only when paid for.
  • Yet another radiating device sitting in your lap.
  • Battery life will be poor. They claim 8 hours, I am betting 4. Not conducive to reading books.
  • Backlit Screen
  • Tied to extremely controlled and closed Apple store. I am an Ubuntu user, and Apple does not want my business.
  • Just a huge ipod, only less portable.
  • Will be subject to net neutrality. How will Apple justify blocking access to certain developers.
  • No multitasking (since it is a computer)

The iPad style device has been around for a couple years already. But because people are such fanboys, this one gets attention?
